Following the recent escape of two prisoner from Kuje Prison last week, the Miniter of Interior, Lt. Gen Abdurahaman Dambazau (rtd) on Monday, 27th June has ordered an immediate security beef up at the Kuje prison and all other prisons across the country. The Minister gave the order in Abuja shortly after a proper assessment on all the inmate was done in Kuje medium prison in Abuja.
The inmate who were standing trial for murder cases were reported missing from the prison on Friday as earlier reported by Sahara Report and are still at large.
The minister who have taking time to go round the prison facility by the comptroller General of the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS), Ahmed Jafaru and other prison officials, expressed discomforts at the incident, adding that he instructed detailed investigation into the case and promises to get to the root of the matters. while the search for the two escaped prisoners continues, he alleged that the poor state of prison and the laxity in security checks around the prison on his time of visit.
on my last visit to this same prison, what i observed was not encouraging then with the Former comptroller general together with the present comptroller general,i notice some security gaps and immediately i told them precisely what to do but unfortunately the situation has occurred already.
The commissioner noted that two prisoner escaped mostly the two inmate who are awiting trial for murder cases, so this is a serious matter that i cant be happy about he noted.
He further assured that the current administration will work towards the renovation and rehabilitation of Nigerian Prisons.
